1 - 4 June 2010

Local and international scientists, clinicians, programme managers, implementers, community members and patients all convened in Durban for the four-day, 2nd Annual Southern African TB Conference just before the FIFA World Cup kick-off.
As a result of the growing prevalence of HIV, South Africa and the southern African region face one of the worst tuberculosis (TB) epidemics on the planet. In its latest Global TB Report 2009, the World Health Organisation estimated that South Africa has the fifth highest number of TB cases and the second highest TB incidence of any country in the world.
Organised by the Foundation for Professional Development (FPD), this years’ Conference, themed "Forging Strategic Partnerships to Fight TB and HIV", brought together professionals of diverse backgrounds, experiences and skills to debate and develop innovative approaches to fight the TB epidemic in the era of HIV.
The conference highlighted two central strategies. The first is the involvement of communities in prevention, case finding and case holding activities. The second is the provision of integrated TB and HIV services.
The Aurum Institute were well represented with 14 staff members in attendance, and Professor Churchyard as the Chair of Track 2: Clinical, Epidemiological and Operational Research. The other tracks were Track 1: Basic Science, and Track 3: Patient and Civil Society. Three oral presentations and one poster presentation were produced from the scientific part of the conference. In addition, Prof Churchyard, Dr Charalambous and Mr Mngadi were invited to present at numerous round table discussions and satellite symposiums.
