Events - St Mary's school (Waverley) HIV/AIDS awareness week
HIV/AIDS Awareness Week

Since being allocated this week to increase HIV/AIDS awareness at St Mary's, a matric committee has been put together to organize various events during that week. They will all be discussed below. Our goal is to educate girls as to the medical and social impacts of HIV/AIDS in South Africa. All of the following activities have been put forward with this in mind.

The programme for the week is as follows:

Monday 27 July 2009
  • Major presentation in the hall to begin the campaign. This will start at 7:40 and end by 8:45 with the line-up as follows:
  1. Jess Standish-White (10 mins)
    1. Background regarding why the matrics have taken the initiative and why HIV/AIDS is important at St Mary's
    2. Basic outlining of the week's programme
    3. How VCT will be run during the week and why it is important (including the St Mary's policy and HIV/AIDS history)
    4. Mentions of thanks to organisers
    5. Brief introduction of speakers
  2. Dr Marianne Felix (10 mins)
    1. The medical aspect of HIV/AIDS: quick outline of what it is and how it occurs (most girls are already aware of this)
    2. This will include information on VCT (and a possible demonstration)
    3. Previous work done with St Mary's Staff and Waverley Girls' School
    4. How HIV/AIDS manifests itself in urban areas in South Africa
  3. Dr Hugo Tempelman (20 mins)
    1. The South African reality of HIV/AIDS
    2. How HIV/AIDS manifests itself in rural areas
    3. How HIV/AIDS is viewed globally (perhaps with a focus on Holland)
    4. The Ndlovu and Bhubezi programmes
  4. John Standish-White (10 mins)
    1. HIV/AIDS in business
    2. HIV/AIDS education from a father's point of view
  5. Questions to be directed at any of the three speakers (20 mins)
  6. Ending by Speakers Portfolio to thank respective speakers (2 mins)
  • VCT from 12:30 - 16:00
  • Community Service Outing to Normande's Chilren's Home. (This has been organised by the Community Service Portfolio. Transport will be provided.)
Tuesday 28 July 2009
  • Anglo Theatre Production: iLethe Ekhaya which lasts 34 minutes. The play encompasses all issues related to HIV/AIDS and has been performed at multiple mines. They have agreed to bring their own sound equipment. This will start promptly at 7:30 as form time will be missed and will hopefully be done by 8:05. (Teachers should perhaps be warned that girls may be five minutes late.)
  • Home Care Course: This will take place in the auditorium at second break. It will be a voluntary course to teach girls how to care for HIV-positive family members or friends. The course will be done by Sister Davis
  • VCT from 12:30 - 16:00
  • Community Service Outing to Normande's Chilren's Home. (This has been organised by the Community Service Portfolio. Transport will be provided.)
Wednesday 29 July 2009
  • Forms 1 - 4: A presentation on how Drug & Alcohol Abuse is related to the spread of HIV/AIDS will be done by matric girls. There will also be one or two HIV positive speakers to speak to the girls in the hall. Additionally a short background regarding Normande's Children's Home will be presented. This will run from 7:40 to 8:05.
  • Form 5: Each class will participate in the "Exchange Game", an activity designed to practically demonstrate the rapid rate at which HIV is transmitted. Four labs, S1, S2, S3 and B2 will be used. Mrs Andrew has agreed to help to set up the experiment. This will be accompanied by a 5-minute address by an HIV positive person. (All HIV-positive people will be sourced by Anglo.)
  • VCT from 12:30 - 16:00
  • Community Service Outing to Normande's Chilren's Home. (This has been organised by the Community Service Portfolio. Transport will be provided.)
Thursday 30 July 2009
  • Seniors to do condom demonstrations in their form classes. Matric girls will be trained to teach these girls prior to this (during the week 13-19 July). Each girl will be required to bring a deodorant can on which she will learn to put a condom. This is obviously voluntary but encouraged.
  • Voluntary medical presentation at second break in the auditorium focusing on anti-retroviral treatment. The specific details of how ARVs work and when they need to be taken will be presented by matric girls. The content will be based on work covered in Form IV Biology.
  • VCT from 12:30 - 16:00
  • Community Service Outing to Normande's Chilren's Home. (This has been organised by the Community Service Portfolio. Transport will be provided.)
Friday 31 July 2009
  • Lighting of candles in chapel for all those infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS (perhaps after eucharist or incorporated into eucharist)
  • Revealing of number of matrics tested and final feedback during final assembly (time for this still needs to be allocated)
