Current projects - Emthonjeni
|

|
The Aurum Institute is an internationally recognised NGO which aims to improve the health of needy communities. Our expertise is Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV infection.
One of the service programmes of Aurum is the Emthonjeni Programme. The Emthonjeni Programme is funded by PEPFAR, the Presidents Emergency Programme for Aids Relief, provisionally to 2011.
The Emthonjeni Programme comprises 4 projects:
- Medical screening service for workers of small and medium sized enterprises. With our mobile Health Units and X-ray vans we can reach workers at their workplaces.
- Medical screening service for workers of the informal sector, in particular taxi drivers and traders.
- Life skills programme in the secondary and tertiary schools
- Capacity to respond to requests from large companies or communities to assist with TB Screening and HIV campaigns.
We collaborate with doctors in the private sector and the Provincial clinics to provide the treatment for any disease identified by the Emthonjeni Nursing staff. We also distribute condoms supplied by the government.
The Emthonjeni programme started in Burgersfort in February 2009.
Other than the Project Leader, the staff comprising 2 nurses, 6 counsellors, a driver, and an administrator were recruited from the area.
The work that Emthonjeni plans to do in Burgersfort is as follows:
- Partner with the local clinic in Burgersfort and assist them with the necessary resources to do TB screening and HIV testing, care and treatment.
- Together with the Taxi Association representatives and Trader representatives, work out the best way to provide medical screening for taxi drivers and traders.
- Provide medical screening services to retail companies and small businesses in and around Burgersfort and Steelpoort.
- Partner with mining houses around Burgersfort to provide services to contractors or family members in need of testing, care and treatment.
- Work with school principals to promote abstinence and delayed sexual debut with school children.
- Respond to requests by communities for assistance with TB screening and HIV campaigns.
