SHAPe: South African/HVTN AIDS Vaccine Early Stage Investigator Programme  

Request for Applications
This exciting new initiative aims to expand and strengthen the contribution of South African investigators to HIV vaccine research through a structured mentorship and PhD programme. SHAPe, supported by the HIV Vaccine Trials Network and the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre, will help to develop and foster young investigators’ careers, specifically clinicians looking to complete a clinical research, laboratory-based, epidemiological or public health PhD.

  • 36 months of full time funding including salary, research-related costs and participation in career development/mentoring activities is available to support 4 investigators

  • Investigators will conduct research in the following HIV vaccine trial sites/labs: Desmond Tutu HIV Centre in Cape Town, Perinatal HIV Research Unit in Johannesburg, and Aurum Research in Klerksdorp

  • Eligible applicants will be South Africans who have received an MBChB degree in the past 10 years and have completed their community service

Please submit the SHAPe Letter of Intent/Application form (available upon request) by 20 January 2010.

Promising applicants will be put into contact and encouraged to work with site Principal Investigators to develop detailed research projects. Full proposals are due 26 March 2010.

Successful applicants will be notified by 30 April 2010.
