Call for applications: 2010 Career Development Fellowships in research areas related to infectious diseases of poverty
UNICEF, UNDP, World Bank, WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), and the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH)
The UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) and the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) invite applications for the award of Career Development Fellowships (CDFs) in research areas related to infectious diseases of poverty.
We invite applications for a Career Development Fellowship from 2010. The grant is for USD20,000 per year for two years. Please forward this information onto anyone who may be interested in applying. The fellow is expected to have earned a higher academic degree (preferably at doctoral level) in an area related to one or several of the DRGs/TRGs listed above and be actively involved in public health related activities. In addition, the fellow is expected to have at least one paper published in an internationally peer-reviewed journal.
Under the direction of the chair and co-chair of the DRG/TRG, the fellow will perform specific tasks in support of the DRG/TRG, including but not limited to assistance in review of scientific literature, bibliographic research, drafting of publications, reports and web-based summaries and other activities related to knowledge management and translation and organizing meetings and web-based conferences,. In addition, the fellow will participate in establishing relevant partnerships as deemed needed to achieve the strategic goals of the DRG/TRG, e.g., convening meetings of key stakeholders, developing special initiatives, and identifying critical investments that must be made to further accelerate adoption of new technologies and/or application for disease control. Fellows are also expected to conduct research in an area that will advance their career.
Over the course of the two year period, the fellow is expected to publish at least one peer reviewed journal article including a Disease/Topic "watch publication". It is expected that during the two years the fellow will develop skills to identify new and promising areas of research targeted at filling key gaps in global knowledge regarding the most effective means for decreasing the burden of infectious diseases of poverty.
The fellow will have the opportunity to attend one international conference that is relevant to the DRG for TB, leprosy and BU.
The outcome of these Fellowships is to have trained individuals in priority disciplines/areas with relevant partners in order to develop specialized knowledge and skills not readily taught in academic centres. On completing their fellowships, the individuals return to their home institutes to add to institutional and regional capacity and become a valuable resource for TDR and other interested parties.
Applicants must submit by e-mail:
- a signed cover letter justifying interest in working for DRG for TB, leprosy and BU including a clear statement of career goals and aspirations.
- a full Curriculum Vitae
- two letters of reference
- scanned copies of scientific publications (pdf files)
- scanned copy of the higher degree
- proof of DEC institutional affiliation and employment
- an endorsement from the Director of the applicant’s home institution testifying to the ability of the applicant to successfully undertake the Fellowship and certifying that the applicant, if selected, will be granted a leave of absence. The Director should also indicate how the proposed training will strengthen the institution’s public health capacities upon the return of the applicant.
