The Royal Bafokeng Administration (RBA) has contracted the Aurum Institute to project manage the Royal Bafokeng and North-West Province Department of Health (NW-DOH) collaboration to upgrade facilities and healthcare services in the Bafokeng cluster of clinics, north of Rustenburg. The aim is to improve the quality of healthcare provided to people living in Bafokeng territories, and to improve emergency medical services in the vicinity of the Royal Bafokeng sports stadium which is a host stadium to the FIFA 2010 Football World Cup.

The project is led by Programme Director, Petra Kruger. Dynamic Aurum Project Manager, Meisie Mabothe, oversees the day-to-day implementation of the project which includes the following activities:

Project tasks
Planning and overseeing the renovation of 3 DOH facilities in the region: the large Bafokeng Community Health Centre (CHC) and two smaller Primary Health Clinics in Luka and Chaneng. CHC services will be expanded to include a Casualty and X-ray department, a 20-bed overnight ward, a dedicated chronic disease clinic, allied health services such as physiotherapy and psychology, and improved woman and child health services.
Procuring major capital equipment for the upgraded facilities i.e. X-ray units, patient transport vehicles, mobile clinic vehicles, and other medical equipment.
Recruiting more than 40 healthcare professional to supplement DOH staff complements. Aurum manages the payroll of these employees who are seconded to the DOH until April 2010, when the district DOH will have obtained approval and budget from the national and provincial authorities to take over these employees into their permanent employ.
Improve record keeping and data management systems
Establishing support service innovations:
  • A patient transport system and expanded mobile clinic service to improve access to healthcare for people living in remote and rural areas.
  • A dedicated general handyman to ensure that day-to-day building repairs are done rapidly so that healthcare services can continue uninterrupted.
Project progress monitoring through regular surveys that measure patient satisfaction and patient waiting times at clinics.
