Dr Edward has been a basic sciences researcher since 2000. He has been involved in clinical trials management since 2005. Dr Edward is registered as a professional natural scientist, which allows him to have a broad focus in the biological sciences. He has a good understanding of working with various donors and delivering various projects simultaneously. Dr Edward is passionate about building clinical trials capacity in South Africa and strives to achieve efficiencies in all facets of clinical trials.
Dr Edward leads one of the largest and most diverse clinical research divisions in South Africa focusing on TB and HIV, with sites in Klerksdorp, Tembisa, Rustenburg and Welkom.
He is currently the Principal Investigator for IAVI Protocol B – A prospective observational study to determine HIV incidence in preparation for future preventive HIV vaccine clinical trials and IAVI Protocol C – A prospective, observational, multicenter study to evaluate laboratory, clinical, immunologic and viral markers of disease progression in recently HIV-infected volunteers.
Dr Edward is also the Chief Operating Officer for the Advancing Care and Treatment for TB/HIV Consortium (ACT4TB/HIV). This consortium, funded by the South African Medical Research Council, brings together a number of collaborators in South Africa to work on innovative ways to fight TB and HIV.
Dr Edward holds a Bachelor of Science degree with majors in Microbiology and Physiology as well as a Doctor of Technology Degree in Biotechnology. He has published in the areas of basic sciences and clinical research.
