Understanding what a changing climate means for health

Climate change is already affecting health in Africa. Changes in temperature, rainfall, extreme weather, food and water security can increase health risks and place additional pressure on health services. Aurum is building climate considerations into our health research and programmes, with a focus on understanding local risks and how health systems and communities can respond.

ASTRA

Adaptations to Strengthen Healthcare Delivery and Resilience to Extreme Weather Events in Southern Africa

ASTRA is a four-year interdisciplinary research initiative focused on protecting people living with HIV and tuberculosis from the health impacts of climate change in South Africa, Zambia and Mozambique.

In Mozambique, Aurum leads the project’s research activities, examining the links between climate, the environment and health in local communities. Working across urban and rural settings allows the team to understand how climate-related risks affect communities differently, and what these changes mean for health and the delivery of healthcare.

Climate considerations also apply to how we work.

Aurum is taking practical steps to reduce the environmental impact of our operations, including increasing the use of solar power where feasible, improving energy efficiency, reducing unnecessary travel and limiting waste.

We are also building climate awareness across the organisation and exploring opportunities for further climate and health research.
