TB remains one of South Africa’s most urgent health challenges.
At the 9th SA TB Conference, Aurum researchers and experts joined partners from across the TB community to share evidence, challenge current approaches and explore what it will take to end TB.
Under the conference theme Vuka: Let’s unite towards a TB-free world, Aurum contributed across the TB care continuum, from early detection and diagnostics to treatment, prevention, health systems and community engagement.
A key highlight was Aurum’s satellite session, “Innovating the TB Care Continuum: From Early Detection to Treatment”, which brought together partners to explore emerging tools and approaches to close gaps in TB detection, diagnosis and care. Aurum contributions included PROTB, RADxAR-TB, PanTB and TB preventive treatment.
Prof Violet Chihota, Aurum Group Chief Scientific Officer, also contributed to Plenary Session 3 on closing the TB detection gap, highlighting the need for diagnostic approaches that bring testing closer to communities. The session also featured Aurum’s Dr Mamothe Makgabo as co-chair.
Across the scientific programme, Aurum researchers shared evidence spanning digital health, TB screening, paediatric TB, preventive treatment, vaccines, post-TB lung disease and health systems.
The conference reinforced an important point: new tools matter, but their impact depends on how well they reach people, communities and health systems.
