Clinical trials at Aurum

Clinical trials at Aurum

The Aurum Institute's Clinical Research Division is preparing to start several COVID-19 trials. Professor Vinodh Edward, Regional Chief Operating Officer: Health Research, explains why clinical trials are such an important part of our work and how they drive impact by having direct influence on improvements for clinicians, communities and patients.

"Clinical Trials are a crucial to the vision of Aurum which is dedicated to improving the health of developing communities globally. Developing new drugs and exploring the possibility of re-purposing existing drugs for other indications and rolling out preventative regimes or vaccines, is aimed at averting deaths in high-risk groups. Our impact is driven by informing policy and practice. The ultimate goal is change both local and international guidelines through evidence generated by the conduct of our innovative trials designs," said Edward.

More than 60 clinical trials have been conducted at Aurum Clinical Trial Sites in Klerksdorp, Rustenburg, Tembisa and  Pretoria. Each site has a dedicated team described by Edward as; "extraordinarily capable, ethical, competent and passionate group of highly skilled researchers, hell bent on positively influencing the lives of those in our communities." At the helm of this group are the Clinical Research Site Leaders.
