Passing of the Aurum Board Chair, Ms Phangisile Mtshali

The Aurum Institute announces with deep sadness the passing of Ms Phangisile Mtshali, Chairperson of The Aurum Institute Board on Wednesday, 4 January 2022.

The sudden loss of our leader, colleague, and friend, is devastating. Her leadership inspired and enabled all of us to fulfill our vision of creating a healthier world.

Ms Mtshali has been a member of the Board since July 2008 and became Chairperson in May 2020. She brought wisdom and added great value to the governance of Aurum. Outside of Aurum, Ms Mtshali was the Director of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation responsible for programming in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. In a career spanning more than 30 years, she was involved in programme development and management as well as strategic communication initiatives, providing great value in leading community outreach and education health programmes, public/private sector collaborations and developing community-based health and development programmes. She was also a passionate advocate for economic empowerment, poverty alleviation and rural development.

On behalf of us all at Aurum, I extend my most profound sympathies and condolences to Ms Mtshali’s family, friends and colleagues. She will be sorely missed by us all.

Prof Gavin Churchyard
