Aurum at WCE 2024

Aurum at WCE 2024

Aurum participated in the World Congress of Epidemiology (WCE) 2024, held in Cape Town, South Africa. This year’s conference, themed “Epidemiology and Complexity: Challenges and Responses”, brought together global epidemiologists and public health experts to explore solutions for the world’s most pressing health challenges.

At our exhibition stand, we showcased our work in public health, research, and innovation. We connected with epidemiologists, researchers, and healthcare professionals from across the globe, exchanging ideas and strengthening collaborations aimed at advancing health outcomes. The conference provided an invaluable platform to highlight our commitment to using evidence-based research  to improve healthcare systems.

A highlight of our participation was the presentation by Aurum’s Project Manager, Mmabatho Molebatsi, whose poster titled “Machine Learning in Practice: Operational Lessons from South African Healthcare Facilities” was featured in the Applied Epidemiology themed poster session. Her research focused on the use of machine learning to predict missed patient appointments, leveraging a binary classifier to enhance the upcoming appointment list (UAL) from the local EMR, Tier.net. This tool enables healthcare facilities to identify patients at higher risk of missing appointments, ensuring that care is prioritised effectively while optimising the care of patients at lower risk.

The presentation demonstrated how technology, when applied effectively, can strengthen healthcare systems by improving patient tracking and enabling more efficient resource allocation, particularly in settings like South Africa, where optimising healthcare delivery is critical for addressing public health challenges such as HIV and tuberculosis.

Aurum remains dedicated to advancing health innovation and addressing complex health issues through research and collaboration. Our presence at WCE 2024 reaffirms our commitment to creating a healthier world for future generations.
